Every December as the year unwinds, millions of people across the country start preparing for the new year by sitting down and trying to figure out where they want to improve their lives. These New Year’s Resolutions can be anything from going back to the gym to cutting back on watching as much television. This year, make your New Year’s Resolution to declutter your home.
You may not realize it, but as the years go on you tend to collect more and more belongings that tend to stick around your home. Before you know it, you’ve lost space in your home and are overwhelmed by an endless amount of stuff everywhere you turn. That said, we understand this is no easy feat. That’s why we’re here to help guide you through the decluttering process so you can take back your home and enjoy your space.
Start Small
Everyone starts the new year with the same renewed excitement for the year to come. It can feel like you’re ready to take on the world. While it may seem you can tackle your entire home in one go, we strongly advise against that. It’s much easier to burn out this way, as it can feel like an impossible task. Instead, consider going room by room throughout the year. This way, your New Year’s Resolution will feel much more manageable, allowing you to slowly but surely clear your home out.
Separate Into Different Groups
You should be able to separate your belongings into distinct groups: keep, trash, and donate.
- Keep: These are the belongings that you absolutely can’t get rid of. They can be sentimental items, items that you use daily, or items that are absolutely essential to your day to day life. Whether it’s a good pair of jeans or your sofa, these can continue to stick around.
- Trash: Items in the trash section should be things that either serve no purpose any longer, or are in a state of complete disrepair. These are items that you have no purpose for, and you can’t give away because of the state they’re in.
- Donate: These are items that aren’t in disrepair, nor do they benefit your life. It could be clothes that no longer fit, a chair that you’ve already replaced, an old bed frame, etc. While it can be hard to let go of some of these items, you’re better off freeing yourself from their grip on you and donating them to someone else who will truly get use out of them.
