Essential Items You Should Donate This Summer

Right now, there is a record number of people unemployed in the country. There is more of a need for charity in this moment than at any time in the last 100 years. Here are a few of the most important items you can donate this summer to really make a difference in someone’s life. Donate as much or as little as you can this year. Donations can help out families more than you think at first. Plus, to top it all of there are a lot more families that could use the help right now then you might first assume. Spending a little bit of time gathering donations will do more for people then you expect it will. Every little bit counts. We need to all come together and help out our communities. Let’s do this.

Non Perishable Foods

There are plenty of families out there that could use a little more food security right now. Do what you can, and along with any other items you can donate, give a few cans of food to food banks in your area. It is one of the kindest acts you can commit right now. People definitely could use the assistance. There is no other feeling that can match the feeling of going to bed at night, knowing that your actions have given another family the opportunity to go to bed without feeling hungry that night. Each piece of food that you donate could be another family that is gifted that very same opportunity. to truly make a difference in the world, we only need to start taking small steps consistently on a daily basis. These small actions compound over time to give us tremendous change.

Bathroom Sanitation Items including Toilet Paper

Hygiene is always important, but considering global circumstances, it is safe to say that it is even more so currently. Unfortunately, many people who frequent donation stores are unable to afford basic hygiene products such as shop or even toilet paper. These are donated items that always get used up, and people do not think about bringing them in to donate as often as they should.

Oral Hygiene Supplies

Taking care of your teeth is important. Poor oral hygiene can lead to life threatening diseases if untreated. Even in the best case scenarios, the end result is painful and costly if you neglect your dental hygiene. A few tubes of toothpaste will do more for public health than you think it will.

Socks

One of the items that is the most requested at food banks and homeless shelters across the country but at the same time is also among the least frequently are socks. It is easy not to think about how important these items are when you have plenty of them. If you can afford to throw in a pair or two of socks with your next batch of donations. Someone will appreciate them somewhere.

Other Clothing

Other types of clothing are only further down on the list because they are donated more often than socks. Clothes are very important for families in need. There is a no health factor and a social factor associated with this. Inadequate clothing can lead to health problems from exposure. Poor clothes also can make people feel poorly about themselves unnecessarily.

Blankets and Covers

Staying warm is not something most people need to worry about as a matter of life or death anymore. There are a ton of homeless people right here in America that confront this fear as a daily reality. Blankets and covers can make all the difference in the world when someone does not have a place to go, and they need to stay warm. Donate any extra blankets, covers, or anything that can keep someone warm when it is cold out next time you go to give anything away. This is a donation that could quite literally end up saving someone’s life someday.

Bikes and Transportation

There are a whole host of things that get in the way of someone breaking the cycle of poverty and homelessness. Being able to easily get to and from a job is one of them. Much of our content has inadequate public transportation, and the needy do not always have access to a car. A nice bicycle or other method of self transportation can make it possible for someone who wouldn’t otherwise be able to work to get a job. Thanks to the fact they are now able to make it to and from work in a reasonable amount of time. Something they were unable to do while they were walking. Do not throw away your children’s old bicycles donate them to charity instead.

Reading Material

One of the harsh realities in life is that even when you have nothing to do, you can still get bored. People who are struggling often have an excess of time, one of the few resources they have plenty of actually. These people can become listless if they are unable to afford ways to entertain themselves or find work to keep them occupied. Books are a safe and productive way for people to spend their time while also keeping their minds active. Giving books to charity is a great move if you want to spread the joys of literacy.

School Supplies and Materials

There are a ton of children in the country who grow up in conditions poor enough to be considered childhood poverty. Even things as simple as getting supplies to do your schoolwork can be a major challenge for these children. Do your part by gathering up some staple School materials and putting them in with your next box of donations. This can seriously make a big difference in a kids life. Giving them access to an education that could have been lost to the without your help. If that is not what makes someone a super hero, then we have no idea what would.

The Do’s & Don’ts of Donating

There comes a time when everyone has to go through their home and do some de-cluttering. People have a tendency to take items of clothing, furniture, or appliances that they no longer want, and throw them out in the garbage. This is generally because they do not want to take the time to put things together, and take them to a donation center where it can be used by someone who needs it. Many people in the country are very conscientious of their civic duty to help others. These are the people who diligently donate items to charitable organizations or resale stores. Donating to organizations will benefit the homeless or those who can not afford to buy the clothes and other items that they need. Donating to a resale shop means that the items can be sold as a fraction of what they would cost if bought brand new. People have furnished their home with furniture that they bought from a resale store. After cleaning and polishing the items, they look as good as new, and can be the source of a lot of pride. Homeless people do not have homes for furniture, but they do need clean clothes. Charitable organizations provide this service through the donations of others.

Donated items should always be something that the giver would want to keep if they could. A good rule to remember about making donations is to never give something that never meant anything to you. With this in mind, you will always give away something that someone else can take pride in. Most resale stores are also non profit organizations. There are a large number of non profit organizations that use the proceeds to help benefit those in need. Some donations that are made are useless, ridiculous, and disgusting. These things must be thrown away by the receiving organization. This is what you want to avoid. Always donate useful items that you are sure others will love to have. There are some definite things to do and not to do when deciding to make a donation of items instead of monetary.

  • Go through the clothes carefully. You want the items that you donate to be in near perfect condition. Check clothes for tears and rips, for stains that can not be washed out, and that the clothes are clean. Dry cleaning may not be necessary, but washable items should be freshly washed.

  • Many charitable organizations do not have ample room for storing clothing that are not in season, so be sure that you donate seasonal items. Separate your donations by seasons before taking them to a drop off location. It will make it easier for the organizations to have the room they need to display or store these items.

  • Always check the pockets on coats and pants to ensure that nothing has been left in them.

  • Fold the items neatly, and place them in a bag or a box for delivery. Try to make the clothes as appealing as possible. This is much easier when there are not a lot of wrinkles in them. Remember how you like the appearance of new items at your favorite store. These items are new to the people receiving them.

  • When donating things like books or CDs, go through them to make sure that the books are not torn, and the CDs are not broken. Also make sure that any shoes or boots that you are donating are not all scuffed or run over. Remember, you would keep these items if you had the room for them, or had not outgrown the need for them.

Just as there are certain things to keep in mind for doing before donating, there are also things that should not be done when donating. As stated earlier, you do not want to give something that is not useful to you or someone else. Keep in mind some of the things that you should not do when donating to a charitable organization.

  • Do not donate small appliances that do not work. That was the reason that you bought new ones. These items should be properly trashed and not donated. This includes broken off/on switches, frayed cords, or heating elements that do not heat up.

  • Do not donate items like used underwear, any types of weapons, or paints, solvents, or any types of chemicals.

  • Large appliances like refrigerators, stoves, and washer/dryers are not typically accepted for donations at many charitable organizations, but there are some exceptions. Be sure to check with the intended organization about these large items.

  • Do not donate bedding items like beds, mattresses, or box springs. Due to the recent threats of bed bug infections it is best to dispose of these items separately.

  • Many charities have websites that will explain how they want the donations to be made. Do not ignore their requests for the way they want the donations made. They will often specify if they want you to use a box or plastic bag, and where their drop off spot is located.

When people go through their closets to clear out much of what is cluttering it, they usually find that many of the items that are not being used still have some value to them. These are the types of things that you want to donate to someone. You realize that if you had ample room, you would keep them. Going through the give away process can be sentimental, and many people end up keeping more than they intended. Being a person that donates to worthy causes can have its rewards. It will make you feel that you are doing something to help your fellow man, and those who are less fortunate. Be very mindful of the do’s and don’ts of donating to ensure that you do not take items to a donation center only to have to bring it back home. Don’t keep the clutter, give it away.
