Don’t know what to do with an old sofa?
Redecorating your home can be a fun and exciting time. It can be a great experience to channel your inner Chip and Jo as you figure out whether to go with mid-century modern furniture or farmhouse chic style. However, deciding what to do with your current outdated or worn-out couches and other furniture can be challenging. In some places, you can kick your old sofa to the curb and it will be gone in minutes. Unfortunately too often old couches add to the waste in landfills and can end up leaching dangerous chemicals into the environment.
Old Sofa Ideas
Repurpose it: Maybe you’re just tired of your old couch but it still has a lot of life left in it. Try having your sofa professionally cleaned or investing in slipcovers. Maybe it’s as simple as adding a cashmere throw and some colorful pillows.
Move it: Maybe you’re redecorating your living room, but you hadn’t considered that the old sofa could be used in your basement, family room, garage or spare bedroom. Just don’t put it on your front porch—unless it’s enclosed.
Sell it: Lots of people are looking for a good deal on secondhand furniture. If your sofa is sturdy and stain-free, consider putting it up for sale on Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace. And if it’s not in great shape, you can always just offer it for free. One person’s trash is another’s treasure.
Reupholster it: Maybe you really want a new look but you can’t afford a new couch. You can try giving your sofa a facelift with new upholstery. You can find a professional or try your hand at doing it yourself with the help of YouTube or Pinterest.
Recycle it: Most sofas can be broken up into pieces and recycled. Most of the pieces including wood, cotton fabric, foam core, and springs can all be taken to recycling facilities.
Donate it. Charity organizations often take upholstered furniture that is in gently used or almost-new condition.
